Shopping AliExpress with a screen reader
Why this matters to us
AliExpress is one of the largest catalogues in the world, but for screen reader users it is almost closed: product names are piles of English keywords, and the information that really matters (what the product looks like) is in the photos. We built OneFindMe so you can search, compare and choose a product without seeing the screen.
What the engine does for screen reader users
- Voice search: press the voice search button and say what you are looking for. If your browser does not support it, a spoken message explains how to dictate with the keyboard microphone instead.
- “Describe this product”: under every product there is a button that sends the product photo to an AI, which tells you in your language what it shows: colour, shape, material, what is included. It describes only what is visible and does not invent data.
- Spoken result announcement: when a search finishes you hear how many products were found, and reading moves straight to the results heading.
- One-sentence product cards: name, price (and the price before discount), rating and number of orders, always in the same order.
- Clearly named buttons: Save and Share say which product they belong to, and tell you if a product is already saved.
- Keyboard navigation: a skip link at the top of the page, a clearly visible focus outline, and a label on every field and menu (sort, category, price range).
- Pop-up windows: (favourites, price alerts, similar products) are announced, focus moves into them, Escape closes them and focus returns to where you were.
- Search suggestions: while you type you hear how many suggestions there are, and you move between them with the arrow keys.
- Accessibility menu: a button with the accessibility symbol at the edge of the screen opens three text sizes, high contrast, stop animations, highlighted links and a readable font. Your settings are remembered. We built it ourselves; it is not a third-party overlay, so it does not interfere with screen readers.
- Colour contrast: text meets a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, and dark mode was checked separately.
Step-by-step guide
How to shop on AliExpress with a screen reader: searching, understanding the results, the product description, what to check before buying, and tracking your parcel.
How it was tested
The pages were also checked with the automated axe checker against WCAG 2.1 level AA, on desktop and mobile. After the fixes, no critical issues were found.
Conformance level: the site is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA.
Browsers and assistive technology checked: Safari on iPhone with VoiceOver, Chrome on Windows and Android, desktop and mobile layouts, light and dark mode, and text enlargement and high contrast through the accessibility menu.
Not yet tested thoroughly: TalkBack, NVDA and JAWS. If you use one of them, your report helps us most.
What is not perfect yet
- After you choose a product you go to the AliExpress website, which we do not control. Buying, payment and tracking happen there.
- Product names are written by sellers and are sometimes in English. The “Describe this product” button is made for exactly these cases.
