Dyson sells more cordless vacuums than most people can tell apart: V8, V12, V15, Gen5detect, V16, each in Absolute, Animal or Advanced versions. The price gap between them is large, and the most expensive one is not the right one for every home. - How big is your home? A small flat is cleaned in 15 minutes on any model. A large house with carpets needs a longer runtime, and a battery you can swap helps more than raw power.
- Which floors? Hard floors pick up fine dust best with a soft roller head (Dyson's Fluffy, on newer models with a green laser that shows the dust). Carpets need a motorised brush head.
- Pets or long hair? Look for an anti-tangle head or the conical hair tool, which stop hair wrapping around the brush. "Animal" versions usually include it.

What the version names mean
- Absolute, Animal, Advanced, Total Clean: usually the same machine with different heads and tools in the box. Compare the list of tools, not only the name.
- Runtime figures are measured on the lowest power with a non-motorised tool. With the main brush head on full power, expect much less.
- Older models (V10, V11) are still sold, often cheaper or refurbished. They are a good deal if the battery is new.
