A sewer smell in the bathroom, tiny flies around the shower, a cockroach that appears in the sink at night: all three usually come from the same place, the drain. The fix is rarely chemical. In most homes it is mechanical: put back the barrier that should stop air and insects coming up the pipe, keep the drain clean, and close the gaps around it. Why smells and insects come up the drain
Every drain is supposed to have a water seal: a bend in the pipe (the trap) that always holds a little water and blocks sewer air. Three things break it. The water dries out in a shower or floor drain that is rarely used. The drain has no proper trap, which is common with balcony and laundry floor drains. And there are gaps, for example where the washing-machine hose or the sink pipe enters the wall pipe. Drain flies breed in the slimy film inside the pipe, and cockroaches use the same open route.
What works and what does not
- Anti-odour drain core: the real fix for floor drains. A one-way flap or float opens when water flows and closes again, so air and insects cannot come up even when the trap is dry.
- Seal ring at the pipe entry: closes the gap. A silicone ring around the washing-machine or sink hose stops smell and insects at the point where most homes leak.
- Hair catchers and sink strainers: prevent the slime. Hair and food scraps feed the film where drain flies lay eggs. Less debris means fewer flies and fewer blockages.
- A drain snake: cleans out the breeding ground. Pulling the gunk out of the pipe works better than pouring perfume down it.
- Ultrasonic pest repellers: not recommended. Studies have found no reliable effect on cockroaches, so we left them off the list.
- Insecticide gel baits: not on this list. They are pesticides. If you see cockroaches every day, a professional pest-control service is the right call.

- Refill the trap — Pour a jug of water into every shower and floor drain once a week. In a drain you almost never use, a spoon of cooking oil on top slows evaporation.
- Fit a barrier where there is none — Measure the floor drain and fit an anti-odour core. Put a seal ring where the washing-machine or sink hose enters the wall pipe.
- Clean out the slime — Pull hair and gunk out with a drain snake, then rinse with very hot water. Keep a hair catcher in the shower and a strainer in the sink from then on.
- Close the gaps — Seal the joints around the sink, the bath and the shower tray with waterproof tape. Watch a sticky trap near the drain for a week to see whether the flies are gone.
