How it's calculated
There is no single agreed formula for ideal weight, so this calculator runs four that are in routine clinical use โ Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi โ and shows the average as your headline number, with each formula listed underneath. They typically disagree by three to six kilograms, and that spread is the useful part: it tells you ideal weight is a band, not a target. Alongside it you get the healthy weight range derived from a normal BMI (18.5–24.9) at your height, which is wider still.

Does age change your ideal weight?
None of the four formulas uses age, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight โ they were built to estimate drug dosing and nutritional needs from height and sex, where age adds little. What genuinely changes with age is body composition: muscle mass declines from roughly the fourth decade onward while fat tends to increase, so two people at the same weight thirty years apart are not carrying the same body. For older adults, several large studies associate a slightly higher BMI with better outcomes than the standard 18.5–24.9 band suggests. If age is your reason for asking, waist measurement and muscle mass will tell you more than any weight number.
Body frame changes the number too
The formulas assume an average build. A quick check: wrap your thumb and middle finger around the opposite wrist. If they overlap you likely have a small frame, if they just touch it is medium, and if they do not meet it is large. Small frames sit near the bottom of the healthy range and large frames near the top โ a difference of several kilograms at the same height. Muscle shifts it further: muscle is denser than fat, so a trained person can weigh well above their "ideal" figure with a low body-fat percentage.
What the number is good for โ and what it isn't
Ideal weight is a screening estimate. It is useful as a rough anchor and for tracking direction over months. It is not a diagnosis, it does not account for muscle, pregnancy, athletic build or medical conditions, and it is not designed for children or adolescents, whose healthy weight is read from age-and-sex growth percentiles instead. If your result concerns you, a clinician with your full picture is the right next step.

Frequently asked questions
What is my ideal weight?
It depends on height, sex and body frame. The calculator gives an estimate plus a healthy range. There's no single 'magic number.'
Is ideal weight the same as a normal BMI?
They're related โ the normal BMI range gives a broad healthy weight range, and ideal weight is a point within it.
How do I reach my ideal weight?
Through a moderate calorie deficit or surplus plus activity. Calculate your calorie target in our calorie calculator.
What is the ideal weight for a height of 5 feet 8 inches?
About 68 kg for men and 64 kg for women by the Devine formula. The healthy BMI range at that height is roughly 55โ74 kg, which is far wider โ that gap is the point. Switch the calculator to ft / in for your own figure; the four formulas will each answer slightly differently, which is normal.
What is the ideal weight as per height and age?
The standard formulas use height and sex only. Age is not part of them because they were designed for clinical dosing rather than body composition. Age does matter in practice, but it shows up as muscle-to-fat ratio rather than as a different target weight.
Why do the four formulas give different answers?
They were derived from different populations and for different clinical purposes, so they disagree by roughly three to six kilograms. Seeing the spread is more informative than trusting any single one โ it shows the size of the uncertainty.
Is ideal weight different for women?
Yes. Every formula uses a lower baseline for women, typically 4-5 kg below men at the same height, reflecting average differences in body composition.
